Top 12 Black Film Festivals

Film festival directors create fair and balanced programs for their festivals. Notwithstanding the quality of the films, a festival with all Black films is not necessarily that interesting as a mainstream festival, but opens up the doorway of opportunity for niche market festivals. As a filmmaker, when I set out to identify the top 10 festivals for Black Filmmakers, I was unable to locate any source identifying that list. Through my own experiences living and working in Los Angeles in the Entertainment industry for over 12 years, I was able to create my own list of the top 10 film festivals for Black Filmmakers. Unable to narrow the list down to 10 of equal or greatest importance, my list actually has 12 festivals on it.

1. American Black Film Festival

Originally dubbed the Acapulco Film Festival, the American Black Film Festival found its way to Los Angeles by way of Miami. Produced by Film Life, Inc., who also produces the Black Movie Awards, the American Black Film Festival is the most sleek Black Film Festival, replete with star studded Black films made independently from the studio system.

Roll-Up for the 13th Annual Palm Beach Festival

The 13th Annual Palm Beach International Film Festival is due to take place in April 2008 and organisers are hoping to attract even more stars and industry insiders than in previous years, including such international superstars as Anthony Hopkins, Faye Dunaway and Michael Caine.

During the week of April 10th to 17th scores of films will be showcased at the festival, drawing many leading movie actors to the town. Last year over 20,000 filmgoers attended the many events and even more enthusiasts are expected this year. In addition, the world’s movie press contingent will inevitably pack the town hot in pursuit of the stars’ and dreaming of an exclusive interview, or at least some gossip.

The Palm Beach International Film Festival (PBIFF) was the brainchild of Commissioner Burt Aaronson and local philanthropist George Elmore. Both had a vision of offering an exciting cultural experience for the Palm Beach area, and at the same time providing a tremendous fundraiser for local educational institutions.

To date the not-for-profit organisation has donated over $1million to the film and television programs of local schools, community colleges and universities in the form of grants and scholarships. There are currently in excess of 2,600 students enrolled on the programs in the Palm Beach area and they are all eligible for their work to be shown at the Student Showcase of Films; screened during festival week.

Since 2003 the PBIFF has included a competitive element in an effort to expand its international status. Awards are given in such categories as; Best Director, Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Short Film, and lifetime achievement awards to motion picture legends are also distributed at the Festival.

But the fundraising is not just limited to the week of the festival. In addition there is also a ‘Friends of the Film Festival’ group that operates all year round, arranging many social gatherings for residents of Palm Beach and Roca Baton at which funds are raised for the educational support element of the festival. Many of their events, such as special Thanksgiving, Halloween and Christmas Eve parties take place at a local bar, club or hotel in Palm Beach, and prove great places for attendees to network in addition to providing substantial funds to the PBIFF.

The 2008 PBIFF looks set to be the most successful yet, with organisers promising big names but staying tight-lipped about whom exactly they will be. But, regardless of which stars do turn up it looks to be a record-setting year in terms of overall attendees, which is good news for the schools and colleges that benefit from the fund raising.

Transylvania International Film Festival 2011, Cluj-Nappoca

In the heart of Transylvania, land of Dracula, is the city of Cluj-Napoca host of the Transylvania International Film Festival also known as TIFF. The festival is often confused with the Toronto festival because they share the same acronym. But if you just refer to Europe then there is no mistake in the middle.

The festival has reached his 10th anniversary, the first edition of the TIFF was held in the year 2002 in the city of Cluj-Napoca. As the festival grew more popular it traveled trough several cities of Romania, but the main host of the festival remains the city of Cluj-Napoca. This year the participant movies will also play in Sibiu and the Bucharest (the capital of Romania).

In the 9 years history of the festival a lot of big names from the movie industry have participated as quests, jury or in the contest, among them we can name: Franco Nero, Julie Delpy, Wim Wenders, Michael Radford, Annie Girardot, Udo Kier, Vanessa Redgrave, Nicolas Roeg, Catherine Deneuve and Claudia Cardinale.

The 2007 edition of the TIFF, was the first to be presented simultaneously in the cities of Cluj-Napoca and Sibiu. In that year Sibiu was the declared the Cultural Capital of Europe.

The last year’s edition of the festival presented a record of 240 films and over 55.000 participants culminating with movie projections in the central square of Cluj-Napoca.

This year’s edition is scheduled between 3-12 June in Cluj-Napoca and promises a spectacular fight for the Transylvania trophy, the most desired award of the competition. There will be 12 movies battling for this prize, movies from various countries such as: Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Iceland, Argentina, Belgium, Uruguay, Israel, Russian and India. After Cluj-Napoca, the festival will move to Sibiu between 15-19 June, playing the same movies, but now with the winners already known, helping in a way the movie lovers to choose what they want to see.

The Transylvania International Film Festival has a total of 20 awards on the table for the 2011 edition, from which we can mention: Transylvania Trophy, Best Actor, Special Award of the Jury, Let’s Go Digital, Romanian Days. It will be a hard task for the jury to pick the winners as the quality of the movies is higher and higher each year.

Because of the increasing popularity of the festival more and more domestic movies are making their debut at the TIFF to benefit from the publicity and notoriety that has raised over the years.

I just cannot wait for this year’s edition!
